Observing and defining a phenomenon (problem or market need)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Developing a hypothesis about a solution to the problem (business idea)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Conducting an experiment to test the hypothesis (getting \u201cout of the building\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step One: Define a Hypothesis<\/strong><br>The first step is to form a hypothesis that defines both the problem and the solution you are proposing. A simple way to frame this is to fill in the following sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My idea solves <strong>[insert problem]<\/strong> by <strong>[insert solution]<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Two: Define Your Assumptions<\/strong><br>In detailing your hypothesis, you will be forced to make some assumptions about your idea. These will include assumptions that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The problem you addressed is actually a problem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The solution you propose will actually solve the problem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The market you plan to target has this problem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The market you plan to target will be willing to pay for your solution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Three: Ask (Good) Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to \u201cget out of the building\u201d and ask some<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Start by targeting people who you believe could be potential customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022If you\u2019re running a college tutoring business, you should not be asking your parents questions. They are not going to be your customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Ask the people that you anticipate asking to buy your product<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; in the future. They hold the answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, you\u2019re going to ask \u201cdetective\u201d questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022This isn\u2019t just \u201casking around\u201d for people\u2019s thoughts on your idea, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022In fact, you really shouldn\u2019t mention your idea at all. This is because customer discovery allows you to let your customers <em>build your product for you.<\/em> Discovery questions are open-ended and nonspecific about your idea. By letting the customer lead the conversation, you will end up letting <em>them <\/em>tell you about their ideal solution (instead of the other way around).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discovery Interview Do\u2019s &amp; Don\u2019ts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Don\u2019t push with your opinion or solution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022No leading questions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Be an information gatherer, not a problem solver<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Do ask open ended questions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Be open minded and listen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Exploit opportunities to learn<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Seek customer learnings \/ experiences (stories)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Ideally face to face or phone\/skype<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Have a second observer to make notes if possible<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Allow the customer to tell you their exact opinions (or lack of opinion) about your topic of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022If they feel extremely strongly about the problem, you\u2019ll see pretty quickly by their body language and tone of voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022If they don\u2019t see much of a problem, they may seem confused or complacent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022They might identify a different problem than you imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022As you get more responses from potential customers, your product will start to make more sense or less sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Four: Evaluate and Refine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Chances are you\u2019ll discover some things that you had not originally considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022You have the opportunity to return to (Step One), incorporate what you\u2019ve learned, and repeat the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Once your customers\u2019 responses match your hypothesis, then you can build something that your customers will actually want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Don\u2019t&nbsp; build the fastest product, building the <em>best<\/em> product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Three common challenges when it comes to customer discovery:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>entrepreneurs worry about their idea being stolen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>entrepreneurs spend too much time explaining\/pitching their idea rather than listening<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>entrepreneurs are uncomfortable approaching strangers, and fear rejection<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Problem-solution fit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customer Discovery: 4 Steps<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step One: Define a Hypothesis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Two: Define Your Assumptions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Three: Ask (Good) Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Four: Evaluate and Refine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Customer Development Process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Customer discovery<\/strong>&nbsp;is when the founder\u2019s vision is captured and turned into a series of business model hypotheses. This is then developed into a plan to test the customer reactions and collect their responses as usable data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Customer validation<\/strong>&nbsp;tests come next to see if the resulting business model is repeatable and scalable. If it is not, then it means returning to the customer discovery of step one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Customer creation<\/strong>&nbsp;is the start of execution and builds end-user demand. It also drives that demand into the sales channel to scale the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transition (or Company Building)\u2026<\/strong>&nbsp;the company from a startup to an organization that is focused on executing a validated model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Customer Validation<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2026.. you have a product that customers need and has been validated in the real world with some paid users. Customer validation is validating the sales and marketing roadmap that will help you gain more market share and customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ideation, Rapid Prototyping &amp; Startup Teams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the principles of an elegant solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is self-explanatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It solves more problems than it creates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ingenuity.
